The NHS E-Referral Service (previously called 'Choose and Book') - Patient Choice
Under the NHS E-Referral Service patients can choose where and when they want to be seen when being referred for further investigation or treatment by their GP. Patients can choose to attend any hospital in England which holds a contract with the NHS (including some private hospitals for certain specialities). The E-Referral Service is an electronic booking service where you can choose the venue, time and date of your appointment, either on the internet or by telephone.
If you GP feels a referral is appropriate he may offer to refer you using the The E-Referral Service. Your doctor will either give you a document with your unique booking number and password to enable you to make your appointment at the time of the consultation, or you will receive the documents later in the post.
